Just never got around to that 1st Birthday Party post! Crazy how times slips away...I did write a little about it on my other blog awhile back, though, so you can read about it there.

Moving on, Judah turned 15 months old last Wednesday! He now weighs a whopping 22 pounds, 6 ounces and is 31.5 inches tall. This means he has moved up to the 20ish percentile for weight (which is a huge growth improvement for him, hooray!) and is in about the 70th percentile for height. Such a big boy!

This weekend we took our first ever family trip to a pumpkin patch. Between a Groupon special and some suggestions from friends, we ended up at Airlie Hills farm which was perfect! Definitely looking forward to taking Judah back there next fall. And, it was so much fun, we're planning to hit up the Heavenly Harvest pumpkin patch next weekend for round two!

I already wrote a post about our trip on my other blog (found here) but it was lacking in the photo department, especially in regards to the whole Disneyland aspect of things! So, I wanted to share a link to the Shutterfly album I made. If I haven't said it before, I LOVE Shutterfly! Especially if I have any promo codes lying around :) I've never been much of a scrapbooker. I love the idea, but it's SO much work and I prefer the clean simplicity of a digitally made album. Another thing that I've probably never mentioned is that I love to keep a little journal whenever we go on a trip. I've never been the type to keep a diary (although blogging is shaping up to be almost the same thing), but this whole vacation journal thing started 10 years ago when I studied abroad and was required to keep a journal for part of my grade. I loved being able to have words to go along with my photos to remind myself of how the trip went, where we were on a particular day, what we ate, what we saw...

So without further ado, our Californian adventure:

Man, I've totally been neglecting both of my blogs as of late! WAY too much going on with a last minute vacation, first birthday party, and the aftermath I guess :)

So, here we go! First off, thanks to my friend Natasha for trading one of her kiddo's well-child checkup appointments with us. Our pediatrician is super popular, so when our original appointment fell during the same week we needed to take our last minute vacay, rescheduling meant bumping the appointment back TWO whole months! That didn't work for us. We really wanted to see how Judah's growth was progressing and to stay on schedule with his vaccinations, etc. Thanks to Natasha, we were able to go in just a week later than the original appointment.

Alright, here are the 1 year checkup stats. Judah weighed in at a whopping 20 pounds 7 ounces! This means he moved from the 7th percentile to the 15th percentile for weight...hooray!! The doctor was pleased and we were too :) For height, Judah measured in at 30 inches! That means he's grown 9 WHOLE inches since he was born. He seems so tall, but he's actually just a little above the 50th percentile for height.

So here are a few more fun facts I didn't include in the 1 year post:
  •  Judah is a pro crawler! He's SO fast. He isn't walking yet but he's well on his out world!
  • He loves buzzing his lips. It's pretty cute.
  • Josh has gotten him to say "Ma" a couple times, but he won't voluntarily say it. He repeated "eye" back to me a couple times the other day as he was touching my eyes and often makes sounds that mimic words we've just said. We think it's just a matter of time before he starts really talking :)
  • Judah loves being outside. He's not so sure about grass, though.
  • He continues to LOVE books and loves being read to. He is so great at turning the pages!
  • Storytime at the library continues to be one of our favorite weekly activities. With the beautiful weather we also LOVE walking to the Wednesday farmers market afterwards.
  • Last month we completed our first session of Waterbabies swim lessons. Judah always did SO well going under the water and we think he's going to be a great little swimmer!
  • Over the first year of his life, his favorite songs have included: "Hey Jude"(-ah), "Jesus Loves Me," "Clap, Clap Your Hands," "If You're Happy and You Know It," and "Old McDonald"...there's much better songs out there, but these are the songs that seem to have stuck and they've gotten us through some rough times (mostly during diaper changes in the early days and MANY times in the car).
  • Judah's favorite snacks between meals are Cheerios and Goldfish crackers. He seems to have taken after mama in the savoring-ever-bite department (not the food-inhaling department like daddy) and prefers biting even small morsels like Cheerios in half.
  • He prefers a straw to a sippy cup any day.
That's all for now...hopefully I can write up the vacation and first birthday party posts soon!

Happy Father's day to the love of my life, Judah's amazing daddy, Josh! (Josh & Koa who were also celebrating their first Father's Day were apparently on the same orange and white wavelength today for church :) In order to fully celebrate Josh's daddyhood, the celebrating began Friday night when Josh & Judah had a guys night out with my dad to our nephew's basketball game. On Saturday morning, Judah celebrated his daddy by sleeping in past 8 o'clock (Josh's biggest Father's Day wish was getting to sleep in, mission accomplished) - as soon as he was up and fed, we got ready and hopped on the bus to go downtown for breakfast at Josh's favorite spot, Broken Yolk. We then walked around the Farmer's Market and bought Josh some strawberries, went to Peak Sports to buy Josh's real Father's Day present: Vibram Fivefingers, and then walked back home. Josh spent most of the rest of the day playing with Judah while I worked on things for my dad's business (post to come on that) and we finished out the evening by ordering take-out from Joshie's favorite Chinese restaurant and renting a movie. This morning Josh got his card (and a gift card for a massage) from Judah and I, we had some pumpkin bread for breakfast (his request), went to church, and had a fabulous BBQ for lunch with my family. Josh also got his second Father's Day wish, a nap :) I think if you asked him, he'd tell you he had a pretty great 1st Father's Day.

Wow, where to begin? Judah has changed and developed so much over the past month it's really hard to know where to start! He quickly went from scooting backwards and army crawling to full out crawling and pulling up to stand within the span of about a week. He is into EVERYTHING and we have had to say "no" about a hundred times more than we ever knew we would. We finally got a baby gate for the stairs and a play-n-play (so I can turn my back for more than a couple seconds without worrying about Lil J's safety) and will probably be doing some more baby-proofing as the needs arise. It has been such a joy to watch him learn and grow so much so fast...and now the countdown till the big FIRST BIRTHDAY begins!!

Judah's First Easter
Sporting his Sunday Best for Mother's Day
I realized that I never posted Judah's nine month appointment stats, so here they are: 17 lbs 12.5 oz (about 7th percentile) and 28 1/4 inches (about 50th percentile). Long and lean. The doctor wasn't concerned that Judah is such a lightweight (breastfed babies tend to be lower on the charts) and just told me that we need to add more fats to his diet. We feel like he's TOTALLY gotten denser since we've started doing that, it's amazing how sore our arms get from carrying him around these days. Wow, what a workout!

So what's new with little j? Well, he still doesn't crawl (in the the traditional sense) but he scoots, rolls, and army crawls everywhere he wants to go. He always heads for things he's not supposed to first (like computer cords, the sound machine in his bedroom, or door-stoppers around the house), so sassy! He's definitely starting to test boundaries and has been known to throw the slightest little fit every now and then. SO not ready for that! He's so adorable, though, we know that disciplining him is going to be a HUGE challenge for us from here on out. He is cutting his SEVENTH tooth! I'm starting to become convinced that Judah will grow up to be a dentist (or a denturist like Papa). With his early dental development and his obsession with people's teeth and toothbrushes (he's ALWAYS been fascinated with us brushing our teeth and likes having his brushed as well) that profession seems only natural!

We're looking forward to spending more time outside now that the weather is finally starting to warm up! It will be especially fun to head to the pool in our neighborhood to cool off on hot days.

My First Mother's Day

We started my very first Mother's Day weekend by heading up to Portland on Saturday morning. Josh's mom's husband Gary had a terrible bike accident last Sunday - he fractured his pelvis and broke his collar bone. He had to have surgery on his shoulder/collar bone where they put in two plates and TWENTY pins. Ouch! Josh's mom Viki missed a lot of work after the accident so she had to make up for it by going into work on Saturday. We went up to keep Gary company while she was away and to help out a little. We had a great time with Gary (who is taking this injury like a champ by the way) and were even able to stop by Viki's work on our way home where we got a behind-the-scenes tour of how a movie production office operates, very cool.

We didn't really have any set plans for Sunday, but it ended up being so great. I'm so thankful to have had such a special day. Josh made sure that I was spoiled in every way possible throughout the day (I love you honey, thank you so much!). We started off with presents in the morning: an adorable handmade card, a beautiful "Mother's ring" with a ruby for Judah's birth month, and some of my favorite chocolates...yum.

Next on the agenda was Starbucks and Noah's Bagels on our way to church...I even got to splurge and have cream cheese on my bagel (lol, usually I just bring it home for the cream cheese since to get it there costs more than the bagel itself...kinda silly). Our church has a tradition of honoring new babies (and their proud parents) each year on Mother's Day, something that we were really, really looking forward to, so that was next on the agenda (I had a number of ladies tell me they were a little distracted by all the cuteness during the prayer...I can't blame them!).

After church we went with my family to Broken Yolk, my favorite breakfast restaurant (my mom and sister let me choose where we went since it was my first Mother's Day, thanks guys!).

After that, me and my boys strolled around downtown so I could do some window shopping. Then, we went home where we chilled for a bit before I got to go have a nice little break with my mom and sister...we decided we'd go see a movie ("Water for Elephants," which was SO good). I rounded out the day by coming home to spend some more time with my boys before putting Judah down for bed.

It was such a great day...I am so blessed!

Nine Months Old!

9 way! There have been a lot of new developments this month including FOUR new teeth! It all has been somewhat of a blur and I think it can be attributed to the fact that cutting 4 teeth at once is brutal...brutal on the little guy's poor gums and brutal on the parents getting any decent amount of sleep. I'm feeling almost as sleep deprived as I did in the early days. We're hoping we're over the worst of it as the 4th top tooth is almost completely through. SIX teeth total

Judah is officially mobile! Not in the traditional frontwards crawling sense, but he sure can scoot in reverse quite well :) He mostly scoots himself into corners or up against the wall or furniture...and then he's not quite sure what to do from there. We'll see how much longer it takes before he realizes he can put it in drive. It's safe to say that baby-proofing is in our very near future!

There's much more to say, but I'll have to save it for another update...maybe after Judah's check-up on Friday!

Check Out My New Blog!

Since some of you just like to check out my blog for family updates, specifically of the little one (which I totally understand, he's pretty cute), I decided to start up a new blog about my random interests and takes on topics like cloth diapering, making baby food, being more eco-friendly, organization, and design. Feel free to check it out!

See You At The Crossroads

Cue Bone Thugs N, not really (although I did just pull it up to listen to, just for fun). So here we are again, back at the crossroads. Didn't think we'd be coming back so quickly (or at all for that matter), but such is life and we have much to be thankful for despite our current situation.

As you will recall, Josh had a major career change about 2 years ago when the company he'd worked at for 5+ years was not doing so well because of the nasty economy (if you don't remember, you can read about it here).  After he said goodbye to Cascade Design, he started working for NuScale, a promising new company in town, and that was truly an answer to (so many) prayers! You can learn more about what the company does here. Long story short (I always say that and end up writing a ton anyway), what was once a promising new company, now feels more like a sinking ship.  Basically, we learned a couple months ago that NuScale's sole investor (funding the entire operation, including Joshie's salary) was being investigated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Translation: not good.  NuScale was forced to furlough almost half of it's employees in January and thankfully, Josh was not one of them, but remaining employees were subject to pay reductions. Okay, not so bad, not ideal, but not so bad. NuScale was hopeful it could turn things around quickly, bring back furloughed employees, and restore salaries, however, this did not happen and things got worse. So, last Friday, NuScale had to lay off about 2/3 of the company. Thankfully again, Josh was was not one of them. He and the remaining 30 or so employees are now working at minimum wage in hopes that the company can be saved (read more about that in this article).

So where does that really leave us? It's hard to say at this point. The good thing is that we've been in this uncertain position before, and we know that the Lord provided for us then, and he will provide for us again.  However this time around the stakes are a little higher...we have a mortgage and a child. And thanks to that awesome first time home-buyers tax credit we are locked into this place for another year (we just celebrated our 2 year house anniversary yesterday and we have to live here a total of 3 years before we can sell). We're not entirely sure at this point how much time NuScale has to secure other funding before permanently shutting down operations, so it's hard to say just how long Josh has a job. We also cannot survive on minimum wage forever! But, we really do believe in NuScale and are hopeful that things will turn around.

All that being said, we know we need to be smart in case things don't work out. So, we need to explore our options and figure out a back-up plan, whatever and wherever that might be.

As always, we appreciate your prayers as we seek God's guidance and direction for our lives.

Eight Months Old!

What's new with our EIGHT month old!? Well, we cannot believe he is already eight months old! Where does the time go? Not a whole lot is new. Judah still loves all his veggies, we've added a few more since the last post. He still isn't expressing a lot of interest in crawling which I've decided is because he knows that we will take him wherever he wants to go. Not sure I'm ready for crawling anyway with all the baby-proofing that will need to be done, however, I am excited for that new sense of independence he will feel when he can get around on his own. He can clap now, which is adorable! But, it isn't quite something he is completely aware of...more accidental than intentional. For the last couple of months I have been taking Judah to infant storytime at the library which is something we both enjoy! It's fun to learn new songs and hear new stories. Judah also LOVES Sunday school each week. He loves the songs, toys, and time with his little buddies.

Well, that's all for now.  There have been some interesting new developments in our lives, but I'll have to save that for another post!

Seven Months Old!

I'm so bummed! For the first time I didn't get Judah's monthly update posted on the actual day :(  Now that I've gotten that out of the way, here's the update:
  • Judah is now eating solids (all homemade): rice, oatmeal, acorn squash, sweet potatoes (yams), carrots, and green beans (soon on the menu: butternut squash, sweet peas, and avocado).
  • Sits up like a pro!
  • Loves standing with help, but can stand on his own little bits at a time (cannot pull up to stand on his own, though).
  • Not really expressing much interest in crawling (I think that's because he knows we will carry him everywhere he wants to go).
  • Always loves to pull off his socks and chew on them or his toes (I think he gets this from his mama, haha).
  • Has put mama's cloth diapering confidence to the test with the new solid food poo texture (ew!).
  • Now has an earlier bedtime (around 8) and takes naps (IN HIS CRIB....HOORAY!).
  • Is SUCH a good boy...we love him SO much!

Six Months Old!

Happy half birthday lil J! Wow, truly cannot believe it's been a HALF YEAR since we welcomed Judah into the world. He has brought our lives SO much more joy and love than we ever thought possible. In fact, we can't wait for him to have a brother or sister (don't worry, we're not working on that quite yet)!  Now we understand why some people choose to have such big families.  We're going to do our best to stick to two, though :)

So, let's see, the biggest things that have happened since the five month post are that Judah has gotten TWO teeth :) and his first cold :( He also celebrated his very first Christmas and New Years. He is sitting up all on his own! Although, we never like to leave him without something soft to fall on...just in case. He can be a little chatterbox, either squealing or babbling away.  The babbles have even included "Dada," and "Mama," which are music to our ears.  He loves jumping in his Jumperoo and sitting underneath the toys on his play mat.  He's a pretty happy, mellow baby, although since teething, our nights have been pretty rough...which is no fun for him or for us.  His big six month checkup is tomorrow...we're predicting that he will weigh in around 17 lbs. Maybe a little under.
